 Loading docks

Dock levellers compensate for differences in level between the loading dock and the truck and must be safe to use. A dock leveller must be CE marked by the manufacturer, which means that it meets the relevant safety and health requirements according to EU directives and harmonised standards. Documentation such as the EC declaration of conformity and instructions for use in Swedish must always be included.

Machine-operated dock levellers are covered by the Machinery Directive, the EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive, among other things. Standard SS-EN 1398:2009 specifies requirements for, for example, strength, anti-slip properties, operation, safety functions and content of the user manual. Equipment around the loading dock, such as dock shelters, may also be covered by CE marking according to the Construction Products Regulation.

Employers or property owners are responsible for ensuring that dock levelers are used safely and comply with work environment regulations. According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority's regulation AFS 2023:11, dock levelers must be inspected every two years by an accredited inspection body, and a revision inspection is required after repairs or renovations. Ongoing internal control, documented maintenance and a safe installation environment are also mandatory.
